The Delinquency Prevention Council supports the Juvenile Mentoring Program. This program matches at-risk youth with an adult in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.

Mentors and youth meet once a week for one hour. Sometimes they meet more or less frequently, depending on schedules and the activity. Activities include going to movies, meeting for a meal, going to the library, playing basketball, and other mutually-agreed upon activities.

Here's what some program participants had to say:

"I am able to air out my feelings about school with my mentor. I can talk about teachers and friends at school. My mentor gives me good advice. I talk to my mentor if I'm having a bad day. It's easy to talk to her and tell her what happens."
-- Youth
"I love school now. I used to cry a lot before having a mentor."
-- Youth
"My mentor has helped me feel better about my relationship with my parents."
-- Youth
"My mentee wanted to reciprocate and thank me for being his mentor. He treated me to a picnic lunch. He was so proud that he could make a sandwich and wanted to make sure I was happy."
-- Mentor
"I feel I've developed a relationship and friendship with my mentee. I missed meeting with her when we were both on vacation... There really is something that's developed."
-- Mentor
